The Vision Driving Them Forward

To conserve the Bornean orangutan and its habitat; in cooperation with local communities, the Indonesian Ministry of Forestry and international partner organisations.

Meet The BOS Foundation

An Indonesian non-profit organization established in 1991 with a clear mission: to care for and protect Bornean orangutans and their habitat, until they are able to be released back home to live in safety and freedom. Living in one of world’s last great havens of biodiversity, the orangutans face extinction due to global demands driven by environmentally disconnected human consumption over many years. Thankfully, things are looking hopeful as more people around the world re-connect to the importance of environmental conservation and species protection.

But support is always needed. The BOS Foundation is currently taking care of over 600 orangutans with the support of around 400 highly devoted staff, as well as experts in primatology, biodiversity, ecology, forest rehabilitation, agroforestry, community empowerment, education, and orangutan healthcare. By rescuing, rehabilitation, and reintroducing these orangutans back into their respective homes, not only is nature greatly impacted- so are we. Orangutans are one of our closest living relatives and highly intelligent, sentient beings.

Why is this Cause Important?

  • Extinction occurred in the 20th century at a rate that was 1000 times higher than the average rate during the preceding 65 million years.
  • Species extinction is already destabilising various ecosystems including agricultural systems.
  • Unchecked species loss would wipe 18% off global economic output by 2050.

Protecting their forest habitat is as important to us as much as it is to wildlife - for the survival of this precious species is interconnected to our own.
